He has been handed yet another tough draw, and if he is able to get through this match he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas. It is not a guarantee that he advances however, despite bein the favorite here, his opponent is former top player Kyle Edmund, who himself has struggled for a while with form and injury. Thiem is in decent form, having reached the Quarter-Finals at the BMW Open and will be hoping for another successful run here.

Kyle Edmund is ranked outside the top 500 after a long struggle with injury. While he is a former top 15 player, clay was never his surface of choice and he will find the going difficult here at the 2023 Madrid Open. He has avoided the top seeds but will face Dominic Thiem, once known as the second best clay court player in the world a few years ago.
