French Open: Daniil Medvedev vs. Cristian Garin 6/6/21 Tennis Prediction
Daniil Medvedev vs Cristian Garin
June 6, 2021 12:00 am EDT
Number two seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia will face the Chilean #23 seed Cristian Garin here in the Round of 16 at the 2021 French Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday June 6th, 2021.
World number two Daniil Medvedev was not expected to reach this stage of the 2021 French Open due to his poor track record on clay. However, the Russian has been superb here in Paris, and has advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in his career here without many difficulties. He has defeated top players such as Alexander Bublik, Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka to reach this stage, only losing one set to Paul in the Second Round. Despite his higher ranking, it is difficult to pick him as the favorite here against clay court specialist Cristian Garin, and he should be considered the slight underdog here.
Cristian Garin is ranked #22 in the world and is considered to be one of the best clay court players in the world. He has already won five titles on the surface in his young career, and has been in good form lately heading into this event. Unlike his opponent Daniil Medvedev he has looked out of sorts so far here at Roland Garros, struggling in all three of his matches so far, even surprisingly going two sets to love down against unheralded Mackenzie McDonald in the Second Round. Despite his mixed form it is unwise to count him out given what he is capable of, and he should be considered the favorite here due to the surface.
This is an extremely difficult match to call. Garin is the better player on clay and defeated Medvedev a few weeks ago on the surface. However, since arriving at the 2021 French Open the Russian has been the better player, moving through the draw smoothly while Cristian Garin has struggled. Despite this, I am going with Garin to get the win here, and I anticipate it going the distance. This has all the makings of a huge battle and really can go either way, but I think that the Chilean is just that much more comfortable on the surface and that should be the difference here.
