Fifth seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland will face unseeded Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in the First Round of the 2021 Halle Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday June 14th, 2021.

Roger Federer is widely regarded as the best grass court player in history, and is a former champion here in Halle. The world #8 has recently returned to the ATP Tour after a long injury layoff, and is seemingly getting back to his best form. Now at age 39 he is approaching the end of his legendary career, and is desperate to add yet another Grand Slam title to his glittering trophy cabinet. After a solid performance at the French Open where he reached the Fourth Round before retiring, the Swiss legend will be eager to get his grass court season off to a good start as he seeks to make an assault at Wimbledon. He is vastly experienced and his all-around game make him a huge threat on this surface, and he enters this match as the massive favorite over opponent Ilya Ivashka.

Ilya Ivashka is a 27 year old Belarusian, and has been around the ATP Tour for a long time. With a career high ranking of #80, this looks like a relatively easy match on paper for Roger Federer, but Ivashka is a talented player who has beaten top players before. While he is not expected to pose the Swiss legend many issues, Ivashka has a significant advantage in that he has already played five matches on grass this season, here in the Qualifying Rounds, and again in Stuttgart. However, while he has played those matches he has not had much success, only entering this tournament as a lucky loser. He enters this match against Federer as the big underdog, and will need a career-best performance to get the win here.

This would usually be an easy match to call, but the fact that Federer is still not fully back up to speed after his injuries, and that Ilya Ivashka has played a full week of grass court events are concerning. However, I am still backing Roger Federer to get the win here. He is the best grass court player in history, possibly the greatest player in history and is not likely to lose here. It may take a while for him to get his bearings after playing on clay for the past two weeks, but ultimately he will figure it out and win here without much fuss. Roger Federer to win and advance to the Second Round here in Halle.
