Second seed Iga Swiatek will face fifth seed Jessica Pegula in the championship match of the 2023 WTA Finals. The match will be played on Monday, November 6, 2023.

We’ve got an exciting final on our hands before the curtain goes down on a chaotic week at this year’s WTA Finals. Amid the fiasco that encapsulated this tournament, the two players who have played the best tennis and adapted better than the rest will play in the rescheduled final on Monday night. There’s just no way we can sugarcoat the pre-match furore and the conditions in Cancun and WTA has taken responsibility. In regards to match play, Iga Swiatek has been in supreme form, beating the World No. 1 and World No. 3 en route to the final. She has not dropped a set and is looking to win the title at the season finale for the first time.

Jessica Pegula, for her part, has not dropped a set either. The American has been equally in good form, raising her level with each match. In stark contrast to last year, Pegula won all three round-robin matches last week and was in overdrive when she met compatriot Coco Gauff whom she defeated for the loss of three games in the semis. She has played the most matches of any player this year (combined with doubles), but she hasn’t been affected by fatigue, so if she were to lose here it would take a complete performance by Swiatek.

Remarkably, Pegula was the first player this season that defeated Swiatek, back at the United Cup in January. She will be looking to repeat that trick here. In fact, she is one of only two players to beat the Pole on two occasions this season. So we cannot entirely write off her chances. Both of them have not dropped a set at the 2023 WTA Finals, but Swiatek is playing for a lot more than the title. She’s won half the battle by beating Sabalenka and needs to back up that result to reclaim the No. 1 ranking. With that said, we like Swiatek’s chances to emerge victorious here.
