Jan-Lennard Struff is the top seed here in the Qualifying Rounds at the 2023 Madrid Masters. The German has seen his form dip dramatically over the past few seasons, but has recently started showing signs of life. For a big, hard hitting player he is surprisingly adept on clay, and has had quite a bit of success on it. He will be looking to use his big serve and forehand to dominate things against his opponent, the tricky Aslan Karatsev. Struff has never been the most consistent player, but when things are going his way, he has all the tools needed to do well on all surfaces.

Aslan Karatsev was once ranked as high as #14 in the world, but now finds himself outside the top 100 at #121. The Russian has struggled with injuries lately, but even when fully fit has never quite hit the heights that he did a few years ago when he burst onto the scene by reaching the Australian Open Semi-Finals. As a Qualifier, he reached the Round of 16 last week in Munich and was impressive in his 6-4, 6-0 win over Raul Branaccio in the First Round of the Qualifying here, showing that he is one to watch out for.

This should be a very interesting match, and it is not often that you get a match of this quality in the Qualifying Rounds. Both players are extremely talented and have been near the top of the men’s game before, and both have a chance to win here. I think the difference here will be the quality of Struff’s serve, and his comfort level on clay. He has been better overall than Aslan Karatsev has on this surface, and I give him the slight edge here. I’m not too confident, but I’m picking Jan-Lennard Struff here to win and move onto the Main Draw at the 2023 Madrid Masters.
