Second seed Jannik Sinner will face newly-crowned Tokyo champion Ben Shelton in a blockbuster first-round match at the 2023 Vienna Open. The match will be played on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

Jannik Sinner returns to action for the first time in two weeks. This will be his fifth visit to Austria’s capital to compete at the Vienna Open. A semifinalist here in 2021, Sinner has enjoyed a great year on tour in 2023, undoubtedly his best by a mile. He landed his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto during the North American hard-court summer. Sinner also reached a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time at this year’s Wimbledon. He also defeated Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz in the same season – something only Novak Djokovic has managed this year. But he’s got a score to settle against the rising star of US men’s tennis in Ben Shelton.

Ben Shelton won a maiden ATP title at the Japan Open last Sunday, beating Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. After surviving his semifinal match against Marcos Giron in which he trailed by a double break in the second set, and on his way to a straight sets defeat, Shelton showcased his resilience and mental fortitude to dig himself out of a hole. And the writing was pretty much on the wall after surviving that match. With a new career-high ranking of No. 14 coming to Vienna, Shelton is a man brimming with confidence.

Jannik Sinner lost their only career meeting in Shanghai in a third-set tiebreak. Not many players on tour possess the defence-shredding weapons to overpower Sinner. But Shelton is one of them. Bundled with one of the most devastating serves, Sinner will be aware that opportunities to break will be limited. But maybe we might see some cracks in the American’s game after a brutally exhausting week in Tokyo in which he played a trio of three-set matches. Sinner to win this money line would be a decent pick to fit in any parlay.
