Marin Cilic is the second seed here at the Tel Aviv Open and is ranked 16th in the world. The big Croat seemed to be heading towards retirement last year with a string of poor performances, but he has seemingly found a new lease on life. He has been exceptional this year, and has again broken back into the top 20. After a strong season where he reached the Semi-Finals of both Wimbledon and the French Open, he had another impressive run at a major, taking eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz to five sets in the Fourth Round. After a First Round bye here in Tel Aviv he is the favorite against Dominic Thiem but will need to be wary of the former US Open champion’s vast experience and growing confidence.

Dominic Thiem is unseeded here at the Tel Aviv Open and entered the main draw by receiving a Wild Card. The Austrian has looked in good form lately after his well documented struggles, defeating Laslo Djere in the First Round here 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. What stood out for me was the fact that he was able to overcome such a tough and tight match which will have done wonders for his confidence. The only thing I am a bit worried about is his fitness, as that match will have taken a toll. He is considered the underdog here against Marin Cilic but is well capable of getting the win.

This match will be a lot closer than the rankings suggest, but I am still backing Marin Cilic to win here. Dominic Thiem is definitely on the way back up to the top of the game, which is great news for tennis fans but I don’t think he is ready to win this match yet. Cilic has been outstanding this year and I see him as having too much firepower for the Austrian who is only now beginning to click. Cilic should win this match but it will be tight.
