The legendary Swiss player is in the twilight of his career but is still capable of big performances from time to time. With a 10-8 record on the season, not much should be expected of him but this is his preferred surface and his aggressive style can be dangerous. After losing in the First Round last week to Luca van Assche at the Srpska Open he will be well rested and eager to do well here. His first opponent is the dangerous Maxime Cressy, and he will have to be at his best to win here.

Maxime Cressy is also unseeded, but is ranked much higher than his opponent Stan Wawrinka at #39. However, the huge serving American is at his best on the faster surfaces, and his unique serve and volley style isn’t quite as effective on clay where he is without a win this season. He has been having a miserable season so far, and has lost six consecutive matches. While this is a winnable match for him, he is likely to struggle here and will have to dig deep to get a result.

This should be a very interesting match between two very contrasting styles. While Stan Wawrinka is far from trustworthy these days and his health is always an issue, I expect him to win. If this was a different surface I would be backing Maxime Cressy, but his style won’t be as deadly here on the clay, and against a seasoned campaigner like Wawrinka he is likely to struggle. I’m not brave enough to trust Stan to win in straight sets, however I’m backing him to win outright with confidence.
