Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova are all set for a Wimbledon final rematch in a crucial group-stage match at the 2023 WTA Finals. The match will be played on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

Ons Jabeur was given a total shellacking in her opening match against reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff. She won just ONE game in the match. Gauff’s pinpoint hitting suffocated Jabeur who just couldn’t get a foothold of the contest. Jabeur was broken five times and in this competition, losing your first match is not ideal. The Tunisian will now play catchup as she seeks to qualify and must win her second group match against a familiar foe, Marketa Vondrousova.

Marketa Vondrousova, for her part, looked on course for the upset, when she led Iga Swiatek by a double break in the first set of their opening match. However, the Czech completely lost her way and momentum, as the Pole raised her level to take control of proceedings. The Wimbledon champion tallied five double faults and was broken six times. After taking a 5-2 lead in the first set, Vondrousova would win one of the next 11 games. Swiatek prevailed 7-6, 6-0.

Ons Jabeur won their first two meeting on tour, but since then it’s been Marketa Vondrousova who has dominated this rivalry taking the next three including the high-stakes clash at Wimbledon in July. Neither player could buy a first serve in the first group match. Maybe the conditions had something to do with it. Jabeur landed 55% of her first serves, Vondorusova marginally better at 62%. But both of them faced a barrage of pressure against two hyper-aggressive returners. In terms of this match, it is a tough one to call but Jabeur looked totally off in her match against Gauff. I struggle to see a quick turnaround. Vondrousova played much better in the first set against Swiatek, and I think she’ll be able to impose herself against the erratic Tunisian player. Back the Czech to win this in the ML.
