Rogers Cup: Daniil Medvedev vs. Alexander Bublik 8/10/21 Tennis Pick and Prediction

Top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face unseeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the Second Round of the 2021 Rogers Cup. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday August 10th, 2021 at approximately 1:40pm EST.

Two of the most enigmatic and entertaining players on the ATP Tour do battle for a spot in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Rogers Cup. Top seed Daniil Medvedev seeks to win his fourth ATP-1000 Masters event here in Toronto and will begin his campaign against the dangerous Alexander Bublik. While he starts this match as the heavy favorite, the Russian will know how dangerous of a player his opponent is and will not underestimate him. Who will get the win and advance here in Toronto?

Daniil Medvedev is the number one seed here at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and is currently ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings. The Russian has been outstanding over the past 3 seasons and has established himself firmly in the top 5. Now considered a major contender at every event he plays, he has a great opportunity to win the event here since many of the bigger names are not playing, and will be full of confidence here. He will be looking to make up for a disappointing Olympic campaign where he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in the Quarter-Finals, and will be fully motivated to bounce back quickly. His penetrating, flat groundstrokes will be very effective on this surface and he enters this match against Alexander Bublik as the big favorite.

Alexander Bublik is not seeded here at the Rogers Cup and is ranked #39 in the world. The Kazakh has improved significantly over the past few seasons, and is no longer the hot-headed player that he was known as early on in his career. After a strong start to the year he has plateaued a bit, and will have been eager to get a good result here to jump start his season. However he is drawn against possibly the best player in the event in Daniil Medvedev and will have his work cut out for him here. He certainly has the game to be able to trouble the world number 2, but will have to be at his absolute best to get any sort of a result here.

This will be the third match between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev winning both of the previous encounters. While Alexander Bublik is a much improved and more mature player than he was a few months ago, I don’t think that he has the firepower to be able to consistently hit through the big Russian, and that is what will be necessary to defeat him. The Kazakh is full of quality and will be able to keep it interesting, especially if Medvedev is not fully focused but it is very unlikely that he can win here.
