Alexander Zverev and Sebastian Baez meet in the second round of the 2022 tennis French Open.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight set win over Sebastian Ofner that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 85 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Zverev won 77 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his 15 break points. Zverev hit 13 aces in the victory and didn’t face a single break point. A match under two hours, Zverev is off to a fabulous start as he looks to build on his semifinal trip here last year. Zverev hasn’t lost before the third round of a grand slam since the 2019 Wimbledon. Zverev has lost before the third round of the French Open just once in his career. Zverev has won eight of his last 10 matches on clay court.
Sebastian Baez is coming off a four sets win over Dusan Lajovic that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Baez won 67 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Baez won 65 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his six break points. Baez got 75 percent of his first serves in play and saved 12 of his 15 break points. Baez is now 2-0 in his first two grand slam opening matches and now has a chance at the biggest win of his young career at 21 years old. Baez looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. Baez has won eight of his last 10 matches on clay court.
Zverev won the only meeting which came a couple of weeks ago in the Italian Open. The match was decided in straight sets and 22 games.
Baez is not a pushover especially on this surface, and he was competitive when they met a couple of weeks ago. Despite a straight sets loss, Baez forced a first set tiebreak and the match took an hour and a half to finish. With all that said, Zverev is still comfortably the more trustworthy player at this stage and big match experience matters in grand slam play. Baez is still young and very wet behind the ears in terms of this level of pressure. Baez could steal a set in this match, but Zverev should prevail when it’s all said and done.
I’ll side with Zverev in four sets.
