Sebastian Baez will meet David Goffin in the Second Round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday June 29th, 2022.
Sebastian Baez is ranked #35 on the ATP Tour and is seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam event, at #31 here at the Wimbledon Championships. The Argentine is much better known as a clay court player but he has excelled over the past season, boosting his ranking massively with quite a few big wins. He was able to defeat Taro Daniel in the First Round, controlling the match from the baseline despite his small stature. He struggled to hold serve at times, which is likely to be his biggest weakness on this quicker surface. Against David Goffin who is an elite returner he will have to be at his very best, but one thing that is working in his favor is the fact that his opponent is not a huge hitter and won’t be able to hit through him often.
David Goffin is a former top 20 player that is currently ranked #58. The Belgian is a very dangerous player on all surfaces, and has made the Quarter-Finals here at Wimbledon before. However, he has been very inconsistent in recent seasons and will be hoping to get his career back on track with a good showing here. He cruised past Qualifier Radu Albot in straight sets in the First Round, building the confidence that he needs to face Sebastian Baez. Despite Baez’s higher ranking, Goffin should be considered the slight favorite since he has quite a lot of grass-court experience and has a bit more firepower to his game.
All signs point to this being a very close match between two very evenly matched and similar players. Sebastian Baez has the edge in ranking and form, and Goffin is much more experienced with a better grass pedigree. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go the distance, but I am backing the Belgian here. His experience should prove crucial here, and that should allow him to edge past the talented Argentine. Give me David Goffin in five sets, moving on to the Third Round.
