Sebastian Korda will meet Jaume Munar in the First Round of the 2022 Gijon Open. The match will be played on Tuesday October 11th, 2022.
Sebastian Korda is unseeded here at the Gijon Open and is ranked 45th on the ATP tour. The American has long been considered one of the top emerging talents on the Tour, but has largely failed to live up to those lofty expectations. He certainly has had a successful young career to date, but has not improved at the rate that many would have expected him to and has been quite inconsistent with his results. At 25-19 on the year he will he hoping to improve that with a strong showing here, especially after his Second Round loss in Tel-Aviv. His opponent here in Gijon, Jaume Munar is not comfortable on this surface but remains a difficult opponent. Who will come out on top?
Like his opponent Sebastian Korda, Jaume Munar is unseeded here at the Gijon Open and is ranked 58th in the world. The Spaniard will enjoy playing at home, and has been pretty solid recently, capable of success on all surfaces. At only 7-10 on this surface on the year you can be forgiven for not believing in his abilities, but a shocking win over world number 3 Casper Ruud in Tokyo last week show you what he is capable of. He is the underdog here against Sebastian Korda but can spring a surprise or two if things go his way.
This match should be an interesting one, with both men capable of outstanding tennis but having relatively disappointing seasons in 2022. It will come down to who is more confident on the day, and I am going with Sebastian Korda. The youngster seems mature beyond his years, and plays fearlessly, something that will be a huge asset on this quick surface. Munar showed us what he is capable of last week, but this surface is not his favorite and I think that the American has just too much firepower here. Back Korda to advance here in Gijon.
