Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet Diego Schwartzman on Day One of the 2022 Laver Cup. The match will be played on Friday September 23rd, 2022.
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas has not had the greatest of years. While he has been solid enough, winning an ATP-1000 title in Monaco he hasn't translated that into Grand Slam success, most recently losing in the First Round at the US Open to Daniel Galan in a shocking upset. The Greek star's confidence will have taken a huge hit, and it must burn him to see other youngsters have recent success. His game ranked among the world's best when he is in form, and he should be considered the big favorite here against Diego Schwartzman. However, the Argentine has beaten him twice before, and in this sort of slump should we expect a third?
Diego Schwartzman is ranked 17, and like his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas has not had the greatest of years. The Argentine had a phenomenal year in 2021, breaking into the top 10 for the first time but a series of inconsistent results have seen him gradually sliding in the ranking charts. A decent showing at the US Open where he lost to Tiafoe in the Third Round shows that he is comfortable on all surfaces, and he should be feeling good at the moment. He is the underdog here and his opponent has the capability to dominate him from the baseline, but Schwartzman is one of the best fighters in the sport and won't go away easily.
This should be a feisty and competitive encounter, as most are when these two do battle. They have played five times with Tsitsipas leading the head to head with three wins. I am expecting more of the same here again, despite the Green star's struggles. His serve will be very effective on this surface, and once he keeps his errors to a minimum I see him succeeding here. Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the match for Team Europe.
