Stefanos Tsitsipas is the 5th seed here at the 2023 Italian Open and is ranked 5th on the ATP Tour. The Greek star is one of the standout clay court players in the world, and is gearing up towards an assault on the French Open. After a First Round bye, he cruised by Nuno Borges in the Second Round, winning 6-4, 6-3, dominating his Portuguese opponent with his serve and forehand, not even facing a break point. He is one of the main contenders to win the title here, but will need to get by the tricky hometown favorite Lorenzo Sonego in the Third Round.

Lorenzo Sonego is unseeded here at the Italian Open and is ranked 48th in the world. The Italian has been having a poor season by his standards with only a 12-12 record. He has a 3-3 record on the clay and was quite impressive in his wins over Jeremy Chardy and Yoshihito Nishioka, but Stefanos Tsitsipas is on a whole other level, and Sonego will have to be at his best to have any sort of chance here. He certainly has a lot of firepower and the home crowd will help a lot, but he is still facing an uphill battle.

This is not as comfortable of a Third Round match as Tsitsipas would have liked, but he should still be able to get through this one quite easily. Lorenzo Sonego is a fierce competitor with big weapons, but Tsitispas has been a top 5 player for a long time and has tons of experience. It won’t all be smooth sailing, but back Stefanos to win here in two tough sets.
