Daniil Medvedev vs Sumit Nagal
July 26, 2021 3:00 am EDT
Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Sumit Nagal in the second round of Tokyo 2020 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.
Will we see a huge upset very early on by the challenger tour playing, Sumit Nagal, as he aims to shock everyone, or will Daniil Medvedev show us his best tennis which we all know he can play, especially when he gets into these hard court conditions?
Sumit Nagal came through an interesting match in the first round, beating the what-used-to-be higher ranked, Denis Istomin in 3 sets. The match was all about Istomin’s serve, and when this went a bit rogue, Sumit Nagal was able to return and Istomin is not the best mover anymore, so more often than not he would lose the point. Nagal won in 3 sets 6-4/6-7/6-4, but he knows that if he had to win in a tight 3-setter against Istomin, he will have a very hard time against a much more in form Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev will know that he plays his best tennis in these hard court conditions, with him having won all of his masters 1000 titles in these conditions, having reached two grand slam finals and a semi final as well. Daniil Medvedev is such a good player because he has so much raw power and speed behind his shots, and like Novak Djokovic, he can rally from the backhand side like it is nothing and hurt opponents who have inconsistent backhands.
This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and Sumit Nagal is going to have no chance coming into this match. Sumit had to fight until the end against a very out of form Denis Istomin who is way past his prime and very close to retirement. Daniil Medvedev is the No.2 in the world and he is probably the second best player on hard courts in the world as well, right behind Novak, so he will come out here in Tokyo knowing that he should be winning either gold or silver. He will not waste any time against Nagal and he will send him packing.
