Kei Nishikori vs Marcos Giron
July 26, 2021 4:00 am EDT
Kei Nishikori meets Marcos Giron in the second round of Tokyo 2020 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.
Will we see improvement from Kei in his home Olympic games as he wants to go as far as he can as he reached the bronze medal in Rio, or will Marcos Giron spoil the party for everyone who loves to see Kei in tournaments because he is able to put on amazing performances against anyone?
Marcos Giron had a very close first set match against the experienced Norbert Gombos, beating the now mainly Challenger Tour player in 3 sets 7-6/3-6/6-2. Although he did beat an experienced player in Gombos, Gombos is no longer the player he used to be and beating him is not really an accomplishment. Marcos Giron will know that he is a good player on his day, but he will know that it is a hard road ahead as he now meets Kei Nishikori who seems ready to give it his absolute best in his home Olympic games.
Kei Nishikori got a statement win under his belt in the first round, showing us that it does not matter how bad the 2019 and 2020 season were for him once he got injured because he can still beat top 10 players when he plays at his best. Kei is at home so there is always that extra bit of determination in his game. Kei beat Andrey Rublev easily in 2 sets 6-3/6-4 and I don’t see many players being able to beat him if he continues to build on that amazing start he made here in Tokyo to get the momentum and ball rolling.
This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and although Marcos will come into this match knowing he has nothing to lose, he also will know that he is nowhere near the level of Kei Nishikori if he is at his best. Kei looks ready to give it his all as he showed against Andrey Rublev and I don’t expect this to chance from one day to the next as he now meets Giron. Giron will have to hope for an absolute shocking Nishikori performance, but I don’t expect for this to happen as Kei progresses easily in Tokyo.
