Fifth seed Tommy Paul will take on World No. 47 Daniel Altmaier in the first round of the 2023 Japan Open Tennis Championships. The match will be played on Monday, October 16, 2023.

Tommy Paul kept his slim hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals alive, and he’ll be looking to do some damage this week at the Japan Open where he could run into some Turin aspirants. Paul will face the dangerous German one-hander Daniel Altmaier, although it could be argued the World No. 47 plays his best tennis away from hard courts. But Paul will not be underestimating the qualities of his opponent, and more so, after learning the hard way losing five straight matches in September.

Daniel Altmaier has played some mind-blowing tennis on clay courts this season most notably at Roland Garros where he scored the biggest win of his life when he upset Jannik Sinner in five sets. He’s won a title this season at the Sarasota Challenger, contested on the dirt. He has performed modestly outside his beloved clay, winning just one main draw match on Tour in his last seven hard court tournaments. Can he flip the script on Monday when he confronts the USA’s No. 2 player Tommy Paul?

Tommy Paul and Daniel Altmaier have no history between them at any level. I can’t see this one being any closer. Paul has found his feet after a forgettable September in which he lost five matches on the spin across all competitions. Altmaier savors his best tennis for the clay, and at this stage, you could make a case that his season is very much a done deal. But his motivation is unaffected and he did give a very good account of himself in Shanghai where he lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in a third-set tiebreak. He’ll challenge, but we expect the high-flying American to make short work of the World No. 47.

Paul to win in straight sets at -132 sounds like a great deal.
