US Open: Bianca Andreescu vs. Lauren Davis 9/2/21 Tennis Prediction
Bianca Andreescu vs Lauren Davis
September 2, 2021 7:00 pm EDT
Sixth seeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu will face Lauren Davis of the USA in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday September 2nd, 2021 at 7:00pm EST.
Bianca Andreescu is one of the best players on the WTA Tour but has had a torrid time over the past few seasons with some major injuries. After returning to the Tour months ago she has struggled to regain her full fitness and has struggled as a result. She will be hoping to regain some form back at this venue where she claimed her maiden Grand Slam title two years ago as a teenager, and will hopefully draw some inspiration from being here at the US Open. She will face a tricky opponent in the Second Round in the USA’s Lauren Davis. Can the American cause the upset? Or will the former champion get the win and keep her momentum going forward here in New York?
Canadian superstar Bianca Andreescu is the 6th seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked seventh on the WTA Tour. After all her injury struggles over the past few seasons she started brightly at the beginning of this year with some strong results. Unfortunately, her injury problems came back to haunt her and she has been struggling since. Early round losses at the French Open, Wimbledon, Montreal and the Cincinnati will have hit her confidence levels hard, but she was able to grind out a tough First Round win here over Viktorija Golubic, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a morale-boosting victory. As always with Andreescu, if she is fully fit then she will usually be the favorite to win her matches and go deep in tournaments, but there is a huge question mark over her head. If she can last the entire match she is a big favorite here against her struggling opponent Lauren Davis, and will be expected to make the Third Round here in New York.
Lauren Davis is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #98 on the WTA Tour. The American has been extremely inconsistent this season, with a couple strong showings at tournaments mixed in with her many early-round losses. She failed to register a single win during the entire US Open series, and like her opponent Bianca Andreescu her confidence will be extremely low. She won her First match against Viktoriya Tomova in three sets but was not convincing at all, serving poorly and all in all should consider herself lucky to escape with the win. While getting to the Second Round will have boosted her morale slightly, she has never reached the Third Round here at the US Open in many attempts, something that will be on her mind. She is the underdog here against Andreescu but should never be counted out due to her opponent’s injury struggles.
Depending on Andreescu’s fitness, this match is straightforward to call. It is simple. If she is fully fit and comes out guns blazing, she will win. If she is struggling with her movement and not her usual dynamic self, she will lose. We have to assume that she is fit here, so we are backing her to win in straight sets. Lauren Davis is a solid but unspectacular player who mainly just retrieves the ball into the court, so she doesn’t have the required firepower to defeat someone like Bianca Andreescu unless she has some help. I don’t think that the Canadian’s health will allow her to go deep into the tournament but she will get through here, advancing to the Third Round of the 2021 US Open.
