Daniil Medvedev vs Dominik Koepfer
September 1, 2021 1:15 pm EDT
Second seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face the unseeded Dominik Koepfer of Germany in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday September 1st, 2021 at approximately 1:15pm EST.
Daniil Medvedev is one of the favorites to win the title here at the 2021 US Open and seems fully locked in. The big Russian is desperate to finally break through and win his first Grand Slam and he will be hoping that this is where it happens. Next up in his path is the talented German Dominik Koepfer, who returns to the scene of his best ever Grand Slam run a few years. Can he do the unthinkable and cause the massive upset?
Daniil Medvedev is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #2 on the ATP Tour. Along with Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev he is a major contender for the title here at the 2021 US Open and he is desperate for his first major. He has been in great form heading into this event, winning the title at the Rogers Cup and reached the Semis in Cincinnati. His all-court game is perfectly suited to the courts here in New York, and his ability to change gears at will between offense and defense will be extremely uncomfortable for his opponent Dominik Koepfer, who is also likely a bit fatigued. Medvedev was dominant in his First Round win over French veteran Richard Gasquet, losing only 8 games to the veteran Frenchman. He is the big favorite to advance here over the German and it would take a miracle to stop him.
Dominik Koepfer is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #57 on the ATP Tour. The German was unexpectedly made to work hard in his First Round win over Quentin Halys, ranked far behind him outside of the top 180. He had to come back from two sets to one down, and was quite wasteful throughout the match. His aggressive baseline game translates well to this surface and he has the ability to dictate points, however he is up against one of the best counterpunchers in the world. Koepfer has had some success here in the past, with a fairly tale run to the Round of 16 being his best result in a Grand Slam to date. He will be hoping to repeat that performances but that seems unlikely since he has been drawn against one of the best players in the world in Daniil Medvedev.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev winning their only encounter. That came here at the US Open, where Koepfer was up a set and a break before the Russian came storming back. It was his best performance at a major and he will be hoping for yet another miracle run like that one, but unfortunately that will not be the case. Daniil Medvedev is one of the best players in the world and quite frankly will not lose here to someone ranked over 50 spots below him. Simply put, he is miles ahead of Dominik Koepfer and the score line will reflect that. I expect a straight set win here, as the Russian continues on his path to a maiden Grand Smal title here in New York.
