US Open: Garbine Muguruza vs. Andrea Petkovic 9/1/21 Tennis Prediction
Garbine Muguruza vs Andrea Petkovic
September 1, 2021 11:00 am EDT
Ninth seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain will face unseeded German Andrea Petkovic in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday September 1st, 2021 at 11:00am EST.
Former world number one Garbine Muguruza has not been at her best lately but due to her vast experience is a contender for the title here at the US Open. The Spaniard has been having an uncharacteristically inconsistent season so far but tends to bring her best for these big events and will be dangerous here. Next up for her will be Andrea Petkovic, a former top 10 player who has also not been at her best of late. Who will get the win and advance to the Third Round here in New York?
Garbine Muguruza is currently ranked #10 on the WTA Tour and is the ninth seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Spaniard is a former world number one and Grand Slam champion, but has been in terrible form for the past few months. Her preparation for this event wasn’t ideal with early round losses in both Montreal and Cincinnati but she looked strong in her First Round win here over the talented Donna Vekic. You could tell that she was lacking a bit of confidence, but once that returns she can be a serious threat here. Despite her poor recent form she should be considered the favorite to win here over Andrea Petkovic and will be confident of victory here. The Spaniard always steps up at the Grand Slams and I expect this to be no different.
Andrea Petkovic is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #68 in the world. Petkovic use to be ranked as high as number nine in the world but like her current opponent Garbine Muguruza has been in poor form this year. She found some form lately, winning two minor titles over the past month and her confidence will have had a boost. However, a loss in the Qualifying Rounds in Cincinnati will have set her back a bit, but she still was able to recover and defeat Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in the First Round here in New York. It was an ugly win filled with errors but she was able to hold her nerve in the key moments to get the tough win. She is the underdog here against Garbine Muguruza, but her former top 10 status and head to head record against her opponent means that she could be a force to be reckoned with here.
This is the fourth time that the two ladies are facing each other, with the German very surprisingly leading the head to head 3-0. Despite this, I find it hard to choose any other result other than a straight sets win for Garbine Muguruza. She is a champion in every sense of the word and even though she has been struggling, she always steps up when it matters most. She saves her best tennis for moments like this and I can see her going on a deep run here at the US Open. She should dominate this match from start to finish, advancing to the Third Round here in New York.
