Novak Djokovic vs Tallon Griekspoor
September 2, 2021 7:15 pm EDT
Top seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic will face the unseeded Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday September 2nd, 2021 at 7:00pm EST.
Novak Djokovic is seeking to make history here at the 2021 US Open, and has a chance to be the first man since the great Rod Laver to win the calendar year Grand Slam. He is the favorite to win the title here but even though his main rivals Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer aren’t competing, he has a lot of serious competition this year. Next up in his path is the unfancied Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Can he cause one of the biggest upsets in Grand Slam history and send the world number one packing?
Novak Djokovic is the world number one and the top seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Serbian superstar is considered to be one of the greatest players in history and he has an opportunity to break the Grand Slam record here if he wins his 21st title, as well as a chance of completing the Grand Slam. With the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal he is the big favorite to win it all here in New York, but he has Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Zverev to contend with. He started strongly here with a First Round win over Holger Rune, but strangely lost the second set in astonishing fashion. He won the other three sets convincingly so he will have to ensure that he does not lose focus like that again, as a better and more experienced opponent would have made him pay. He is the massive favorite to get through this Second Round match against Tallon Griekspoor and he will surely use this opportunity to fine tune his game and make sure that he is primed and ready for the later rounds.
Tallon Griekspoor is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #121 on the ATP Tour. The Dutchman is very inexperienced at this level and in fact won his first ever Grand Slam main draw match against Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round. In a very impressive display he was able to fight from two sets to one down to claim the five set victory, which will have done his confidence the world of good. He hit an astonishing 30 aces and 58 winners, and will no doubt be aggressive against his next opponent, Novak Djokovic. Unfortunately for him, Djokovic is probably the best returners in history and is an elite defensive player, so Griekspoor’s main strengths will be nullified by his Serbian opponent.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and there is only one possible outcome, which is a straight sets win for Novak Djokovic. Simply put, he is miles ahead of his opponent Tallon Griekspoor and will not lose to someone ranked over 100 places below him in the ATP rankings. Djokovic will be eager to fine tune his game ahead of an expected run to the title here, and will steamroll his inexperienced opponent here. Novak Djokovic to win easily in straight sets, advancing to the Third Round of the 2021 US Open.
