US Open: Simona Halep vs. Camila Giorgi 8/30/21 Tennis Prediction

Simona Halep (12) of Romania will face the unseeded Italian Camila Giorgi i the First Round of the 2021 US Open in New York. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday August 30th, 2021 at approximately 11:00am EST.

A thrilling match is expected as former world number one Simona Halep does battle with one of the hottest players on the WTA Tour in Camila Giorgi for a spot in the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open. This is one of the most anticipated First Round matches here in Flushing Meadows and it is hard to separate the two. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round?

Simona Halep is seeded #12 here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked one spot lower at #13. The former world number one has had a miserable time lately with injuries and has only recently made her return to the WTA Tour and she did not impress, losing in the First Round at the Rogers Cup and withdrawing in the Second Round in Cincinnati. When she is fit then she is one of the main contenders for the title at every event that she enters but her status is a big unknown at this stage. She is playing the in-form Camila Giorgi here in the First Round and if we knew that she was fit we would likely back her but it is hard to trust her here. She is undeniably the better player when healthy but she looked out of sorts in her recent return and it is hard to back her to win here.

Camila Giorgi is unseeded here in New York and is ranked #36 in the world. The Italian won the biggest title of her career a few weeks ago at the Rogers Cup and has built some serious confidence ahead of the US Open. However she lost in the First round the next week in Cincinnati in a shocking result which shows that she is also hard to trust. She is very experienced and now that she has some momentum behind her she could be dangerous here, but has received a very tough draw in Simona Halep, who is a two time Grand Slam winner and former number one. While Giorgi is the underdog here, if her opponent is at anything less than 100% then we could be in for a surprise.

This is the second time that the two players are meeting on the WTA Tour, with Halep winning their only match all the way back in 2015. This is an extremely difficult match to call, and it completely depends on if the Romanian is fit. The formula is simple: if Halep is at 100%, she is the big favorite to win here but if she isn’t, Camila Giorgi is more than capable of causing the upset. As much as I find it difficult to trust the former world number one, Giorgi is equally hard to trust even when healthy. I find it unlikely that Halep would have entered if not healthy given her injury struggles over the past few seasons, so I have to assume that she is at least near to full fitness. If she is even close to 100% then I think that she will have too much quality for the Italian and I’m backing Halep to win here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 US Open.
