Wimbledon 2021: Diego Schwartzman vs. Benoit Paire 6/28/21 Tennis Prediction
Diego Schwartzman vs Benoit Paire
June 28, 2021 1:00 pm EDT
Ninth seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman will face Benoit Paire of France in the First Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday June 28th, 2021 at 12:30pm EST.
It is hard to know what to expect with any match involving Benoit Paire. The temperamental Frenchman is very talented player, but is very easily distracted and has seemed very disinterested on the ATP Tour over the past few years. He is only won two matches so far this year and is coming up against one of the best players in the world in Diego Schwartzman, so his chances do not appear to be good here. While Paire’s game is definitely better suited for this surface than his Argentine opponent, talent can only take you so far so it is unlikely that he will be able to get much out of this match here at Wimbledon.
Diego Schwartzman is currently ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the ninth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The diminutive Argentine has taken his game to a whole new level over the past two seasons and is a firmly established top 15 player that recently broke into the top 10 for the first time last year. While he has never had much success on this surface, he is still one of the best movers on tour, and is an extremely hard worker. He enters this match against Benoit Paire as the big favorite, due to his superior ranking and his opponent’s general lack of interest in tennis over the past few seasons. If Paire is fully focused and giving 100% then he certainly has the firepower to be able to get the win here, but we have seen that happen so few times this year that it is hard to count on it.
This is a tough match to predict, due to Schwartzman’s struggles on the surface and Paire’s lack of focus. If this was any other surface then it would be a very easy day at the office for the Argentine, but his size and lack of firepower is not a good combination on grass. Despite this, I am still going to back Diego Schwartzman to get the win here. Paire hasn’t shown any indication that he cares enough to put in the effort, and that is needed to defeat a top player. Diego may struggle a bit as he gets used to the surface, but expect him to come away with the win here and advance to the Second Round.
