17th seeded Chilean Cristian Garin will face unseeded Marc Polmans of Australia in the Second Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday July 1st, 2021 at 6:00am EST.

Can the Aussie Qualifier Marc Polmans cause the upset here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships by defeating the 17th seed Cristian Garin? He has spent quite a bit of time on court so far and may be feeling the effects, but so will his opponent who had a difficult five-setter in the opening round. Who will win and advance to the Third Round?

Cristian Garin is ranked #20 on the ATP Tour and is the number seventeen seed here at Wimbledon. The young Chilean has proven that he is one of the world’s best clay court players over the past few years, and has had a couple notable results on hard. He doesn’t have much experience on grass however, as evidenced by his marathon five set win over the unheralded Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the First Round. This will be first time that Garin has reached the Second Round here at Wimbledon and he will be highly motivated to advance further. While he is not expected to be a serious contender here, he was given a great draw and will be looking to make the most of this opportunity.

Marc Polmans has had a lot of tennis under his belt so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, coming through the Qualis, including a marathon five set win over Ramkumar Ramanathan which he won 11-9 in the fifth. In the First Round, the world number 154 defeated Lu Yen-Hsun in four sets, reaching the Second Round here for the first time just like his opponent Cristian Garin. Even though Polmans is considered the big underdog here in this match he can take some confidence in the fact that his highly-rated opponent has just as poor a grass-court record as he does, and is vulnerable here at Wimbledon.

This is the first time that these two will be playing each other, and despite the huge gulf in rankings this match may be closer than many think. Garin is world-class, but is clearly struggling to adapt to the speed and movement necessary on this surface, and certainly is beatable here. His fatigue likely won’t be a factor as Marc Polmans also will be feeling the effects of long hours on court. All things considered, I am going to pick Cristian Garin to win this match. Even though he is not comfortable on grass he is the much better player, and five sets will give him enough time to figure it out. Polmans likely will win a set but Garin will emerge victorious here.
