July 2, 2021 11:45 am EDT
Tenth seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov will face Andy Murray of Great Britain in the Third Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday July 2nd, 2021 at approximately 11:45am EST.
What a match is in store for us here in the Third Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Tennis legend Sir Andy Murray will face young Canadian star Denis Shapovalov in a match that tennis fans will not want to miss. The entire nation will be behind local hero Murray on Center Court as he bids to reach the Round of 16. Can Shapovalov cope with the pressure and get the win as many expect?
Denis Shapovalov is currently ranked #12 on the ATP Tour and is the tenth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Canadian has exploded over the past few seasons, and broke into the top 10 for the first time last year. While he is mainly considered a hard court player, he does have some grass court pedigree since he is a former Junior Wimbledon champion, and has been making strides on the surface lately. He was surprisingly pushed to the limit by German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the First Round, but was given the opportunity to relax when his Second Round opponent Pablo Andujar retired due to injury. His big serve and powerful groundstrokes make him dangerous on this surface, and he is beginning to feel more comfortable on this surface. He is the favorite here, and if he can handle the nerves he has a good shot of advancing here.
Andy Murray is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is making his first appearance here since 2017. The former Wimbledon Champion and world number one has been setting hearts alight this week, as he has successfully returned from a career-threatening injury to reach the Third Round. A fantastic win over Nikolosz Basilashvili was followed by a five setter over Oscar Otte, and you must wonder if he has anything left in the tank. Knowing the British star, he will give it his all even if he is drained, and will pull from the crowd energy on Center Court, where every single person will be cheering for him. He has the perfect game for Wimbledon, and tennis fans will be dreaming of the upset.
This is a tough match to call, but I am going to go with Andy Murray causing the upset to keep the dream alive at Wimbledon. Denis Shapovalov is a young star and is the obvious star on paper, but I think that he may struggle with the conditions on Centre Court where the entire fan base will be behind their local hero. He is definitely good enough to make it close and could even win, but I think that Andy Murray is riding the wave of momentum that he has created and will have the perfect game to counter Shapovalov’s ultra-aggression. Andy Murray to win yet another tough match, advancing to the Round of 16 here at Wimbledon
