Denis Shapovalov vs Karen Khachanov
July 7, 2021 10:00 am EDT
Tenth seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov will face Karen Khachanov of Russia in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday July 7th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined.
An ultra-aggressive battle is expected here in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Denis Shapovalov and Karen Khachanov face off for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Both men play a very attacking style of tennis and this match is sure to be full of flashy winners and aggressive tennis. Who will get the win here and advance to their first ever Grand Slam Semi-Final at Wimbledon?
Denis Shapovalov is currently ranked #12 on the ATP Tour and is the 10th seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. After a surprisingly tough five setter over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the First Round he has been dominant especially in his straight sets wins over Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut in the previous rounds. He has a lot of variety in his game and is growing more comfortable in transition and at the net, and those things coupled with his strong serve make him a true force on this quicker surface. While he enters this match as the slight favorite over Karen Khachanov, his opponent is very experienced and can get hot at a minute’s notice, so should not be underestimated.
Karen Khachanov was formerly ranked in the top 10, but has seen his ranking slide drastically in recent times due to loss of form. However, he has seemed renewed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and came through a tough five setter in the Round of 16 over Sebastian Korda. He should great fighting spirit to come back from 3-1 down in the decider, and will be full of confidence here. Khachanov in this sort of form is certainly good enough to get the win here over his favored opponent Denis Shapovalov, but it will be interesting to see how he has recovered afer that grueling match with Korda.
This will be the second time the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, with Shapovalov winning their only meeting. This is set to be a very exciting and interesting match, and it really can go either way. In my opinion, it will come down to which player can handle the nerves best and keep their unforced error count low. I expect that player to be Denis Shapovalov. He has matured greatly as a player over the past few seasons and looked unfazed by the Centre Court crowd so far. He also has a bit more variety than Karen Khachanov and those things will likely be the difference here. It’ll be tight, but expect the young Canadian to advance to his first Grand Slam Semi-Final here at Wimbledon.
