Frances Tiafoe vs Vasek Pospisil
June 30, 2021 11:00 am EDT
Frances Tiafoe of the United States will face Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the Second Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday June 30th, 2021.
This is an interesting match between two very talented players that have been on the decline lately. Both men have been ranked inside the top 30 in recent times but have struggled since, and it is good to see them back playing solid tennis again. Tiafoe is riding high after his win over third seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and will be eying a deep run here at Wimbledon now that the draw has been opened up for him. Can he advance even further? Or can the unseeded veteran Pospisil stop him?
Frances Tiafoe is currently ranked #56 on the ATP Tour, and has a career high of #29. Despite some inconsistent preparation for this event he stunned the tennis world by producing one of the biggest shocks in recent memory when he defeated the third seed and Roland Garros runner up Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. History has shown us that when Tiafoe is confident he can be very tough to beat and he should be considered the firm favorite here against Vasek Pospisil.
Vasek Pospisil is also unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is currently ranked #65 on the ATP Tour. Like his next opponent Frances Tiafoe, the Canadian is a former top 30 player that has seen his ranking slowly slide over the past few years. Pospisil has been having a quiet season so far in 2021, and had a mixed preparation for this event by losing in the First Round in Halle before a Quarter-Final appearance at Eastbourne. He was largely untested in the First Round by Roberto Carballes Baena, and his strong serve and steady groundstrokes make him a tough opponent on this surface.
This should be an interesting match, with both men capable of getting the win. However, Frances Tiafoe has more upside, and is riding a wave of confidence after the biggest win of his career over Stefanos Tsitsipas. I think Pospisil can win a set, but it will be Tiafoe advancing to the Third Round here.
