Wimbledon: Gael Monfils vs. Pedro Martinez 7/01/21 Tennis Prediction
Gael Monfils vs Pedro Martinez
July 1, 2021 8:00 am EDT
Thirteenth seed Gael Monfils of France will face unseeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the Second Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday July 1st, 2021.
Popular Frenchman Gael Monfils has been in a major slump over the past two seasons, and will be hoping for a solid showing here at Wimbledon to get his season and career back on track. Next up in his path is the young Spaniard Pedro Martinez. Who will get the win here and advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Gael Monfils is the 13th seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is currently ranked #17 on the ATP Tour. The Frenchman has been having a miserable time lately on the tour and has been struggling to win a match, with a 2-8 record this year. He struggled to overcome unfancied Christopher O’Connell in the First Round in five sets, showing how far he has fallen. Despite this, he will be delighted to have won that match and it will have given him a much needed confidence boost. Monfils needs to enjoy his tennis and is very much a confidence based player, so him being happy will go a long way. Even though his recent record has been poor, he has to be considered the favorite here over Pedro Martinez, mainly due to his experience.
Pedro Martinez is ranked #107 on the ATP Tour and is making his main draw debut here at Wimbledon. He made the most of his opportunity by defeating the higher-ranked Stefano Travaglia, playing some impressive attacking tennis and taking the ball early, even on these faster courts. He is mainly considered a clay court specialist, so that win can be considered an upset, and he will be in search of yet another one here against Gael Monfils. The two are almost 100 spots apart in the rankings, but he knows of his opponent’s struggles and anything is possible when it comes to the Frenchman these days.
This will be the first time the two have played, and it will certainly be closer than the rankings suggest. However, despite his poor form I am going with Gael Monfils to get the win. He is simply too good to struggle forever, and this is a very winnable match for him here. Martinez is a fighter and won’t throw it away, but I expect Monfils to figure it out, and use his power to overcome the Spaniard’s challenge. Monfils to win in four or five sets, advancing to the Third Round of a major for the first time since 2019.
