Grigor Dimitrov vs Fernando Verdasco
June 29, 2021 8:30 am EDT
Grigor Dimitrov (18) meets Fernando Verdasco in the first round of the 2021 Championships on Tuesday, June 29th 2021.
Will we see Fernando making his amazing comeback successfully here in London after having come through some serious injuries or will Grigor Dimitrov also show us some longly awaited strong form which we have not seen in a while?
Fernando Verdasco will be very determined to get back to his best as we all love to see him at his best, but he will also know it is going to be a tough road ahead with a more and more competitive field on the ATP Tour. Verdasco would have loved an easier opponent in his first round of the draw in London, but he meets Dimitrov who knows him very well and who has not had injury struggles as of recently. Verdasco can still shock everyone, but he will have to show us some tennis which we haven’t seen over the last few weeks.
Grigor Dimitrov will know that he should be winning this match because he is in better form, although nothing impressive, and he has not had injury issues. Grigor Dimitrov will want to find his form here in London, but I need to see him determined to make a statement rather than being the usual Grigor who does not care about winning titles or making it far. Grigor is a hard to beat player on his best day and can beat anyone, but he can also be the worst player in a tournament when he is off one day.
This is going to be the 8th meeting between both players, with a tight rivalry with Dimitrov winning 4 and Fernando winning 3. I believe we will see some tight moments because Fernando will have been working very hard behind closed doors to find his best tennis on grass, but at the end of the day, Dimitrov should get the win under his belt. If he does not, he really needs to rethink his mentality and game as he cannot afford to continue playing this poorly if he wants to maintain his ranking.
