Wimbledon: Iga Swiatek vs. Irina-Camelia Begu 7/02/21 Tennis Prediction
Iga Swiatek vs Irina-Camelia Begu
July 2, 2021 6:00 am EDT
Seventh seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland will face unseeded Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the Third Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday July 2nd, 2021 at 6:00am EST.
Iga Swiatek is the latest superstar to burst onto the scene of the WTA Tour. The young Pole shocked the world when she won the French Open last year as a teenager, and is seeking to conquer the grass next. She has looked good so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and will be confident in going deep into the draw. Her next opponent is the Romanian veteran Irina-Camelia Begu who has never set the world alight, but is a very solid and experienced player. Can she cause the upset and advance to the Round of 16 for the first time here at Wimbledon?
Iga Swiatek is ranked #9 on the WTA Tour and is the seventh seed here at the Wimbledon Championships. She is one of the most talented players to have emerged recently, and backed up the hype by winning the French Open in 2020, and has shone on the tour since. While she is very inexperienced on grass, she has started extremely well here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, defeating Hsieh and Zvonareva in straight sets. She is so talented that she seemingly can adapt to any surface and situation, and must be considered a long shot contender for the title here. She starts as the big favorite in her next match against Irina-Camelia Begu, and once she keeps her unforced errors low should be able to outclass her opponent here.
Irina-Camelia Begu is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #79 on the WTA Tour. She is a very experienced player on the tour, but has never had much success at Wimbledon, never reaching beyond the Third Round. Once ranked as high as #22, she has started well here, defeating Katie Volynets in the First Round and then upsetting 26th seed Petra Martic. She is a very solid baseline player but lacks weapons that are necessary to succeed on the grass. She doesn’t move as well as she once did, yet another reason she should be considered the underdog here to Polish star Iga Swiatek.
This is the first time that the two women have faced each other, and it should be a relatively quick and straightforward meeting. The fact is that Iga Swiatek is a much better player than her opponent Irina-Camelia Begu, and the only possible advantage that the Romanian could have is her experience on the grass. While she has played more matches on the surface, she has never had much success at all, so I wouldn’t consider that a factor here. Swiatek is faster, stronger and has more weapons, all ingredients for a quick straight sets win here.
