Eighth seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic will face Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday July 5th, 2021 at 8:00am EST.

A very exciting match is expected here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Karolina Pliskova faces Liudmila Samsonova for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Pliskova was once counted among the best players in the world but has been having a rough patch over the past few seasons. She has seemed to find form here at Wimbledon and will be hoping to go even further, but she is running into the in-form Liudmila Samsonova here. Who will win and advance to the Quarters?

Karolina Pliskova is currently ranked #13 on the WTA Tour and is the eighth seed here at Wimbledon. The Czech star remains a very good player, but has seen a dramatic decline over the past few seasons that is likely attributed to a lack of confidence. When she is in-form she is extremely hard to beat and that has been the case so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, as she has served outstandingly and has reached the Round of 16 without dropping a set. She is yet to be truly tested however, and her next opponent is one of the biggest tests on grass court at the moment. Liudmila Samsonova has been in a roll over the past two weeks, and while she doesn’t have the experience as Pliskova, she is sure to make this match very interesting. Pliskova has a big game and is firing at the moment, but this match will be a lot closer than the rankings suggest.

Liudmila Samsonova is ranked #65 on the WTA Tour, and entered this tournament via a Wild Card. While many people may never have heard of the Russian, she is possibly the most in-form player in the world at the moment, and is currently on a 10 match winning streak on grass. She win the lead-up tournament to this event in Berlin, defeating numerous top players such as Victoria Azarenka and Marketa Vondrousova in the process, and has continued that here, notably defeating Sloane Stephens in the Third Round with some astonishing tennis. While she is ranked way below her Round of 16 opponent Karolina Pliskova, she is truly capable of causing the upset and it will be very interesting to see what happens here.

This is a tough math to call, despite the big gap in their rankings. Liudmila Samsonova is on a serious grass-court streak at the moment, but you cannot discount Pliskova’s experience and ranking. I am expecting a tough three setter, but give me the former world number one here. Experience comes in very handy deep into Grand Slams, and while I am not discrediting the Russian’s run, I have doubts about how long she an keep it up. She is yet to face a player here at Wimbledon of Pliskova’s caliber, and I think her streak ends here. Karolina Pliskova to win in three sets here.
