Frances Tiafoe vs Thiago Monteiro
August 25, 2021 7:00 pm EDT
Frances Tiafoe (13) of the USA will face Brazillian Thiago Monteiro in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday August 25th, 2021 at 7:00pm EST.
Thirteenth seed Frances Tiafoe will face Thiago Monteiro for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina. Both men are highly experienced and have been playing very well, setting the stage for a very entertaining match. Tiafoe is a crowd favorite wherever he plays, but especially at home in the United States he should expect to have the entire crowd behind him. Can Monteiro overcome that and upset the talented American?
Frances Tiafoe is currently ranked #51 in the world and is the thirteenth seed here at the Winston-Salem Open. The American has a very dynamic game and plays ultra-aggressive tennis, which can be fantastic on some days, but can lead him to be error prone on others. When he plays well though, he is very tough to beat, and he was in supreme form in his straight-sets win over Andy Murray. The American overpowered the former world number one, and after a tight opening set really pulled away with some dominant tennis. He has been having yet another inconsistent season and he can really be frustrating for bettors as he is capable of beating the very best but then has some shocking losses. If he plays well then he should win here, but he can be hard to trust.
Thiago Monteiro is a highly experienced ATP Tour veteran, currently ranked #93 in the world. Like his opponent Frances Tiafoe he is a very inconsistent player, and after a strong start to the year where he made the Semi-Finals of the Great Ocean Road event, he has had some very poor results since. In fact, he entered this event on the back of a six match losing streak, and will have been delighted to have broken that with his First Round win over James Duckworth in an unconvincing three setter. He then had an easier victory over the inexperienced Eduardo Nava, but this will be his biggest test yet. He is definitely the big underdog here, and while on a good day he is capable of beating the American, he is likewise hard to trust due to his very poor recent form.
It is hard to know what to expect from this match, as both players can be either very good, or very poor. They have shown signs of turning it around lately though, and Tiafoe in particular is capable of some world-class tennis. Monteiro is a solid player but has been in very poor form lately, so there is no way that bettors should back him here. While Tiafoe is inconsistent, he still has massive upside and tends to save his best tennis for US soil, and he will be looking forward to putting on a show for the fans here and at the US Open. The American should win this match in straight sets, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the Winston-Salem Open.
