Marcos Giron vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert
August 25, 2021 5:40 pm EDT
Marcos Giron of the USA will face Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday August 25th, 2021 at approximately 5:40pm EST.
Marcos Giron and Pierre-Hugues Herbert are very evenly matched, and will do battle here for a spot in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. Both men have started well this week and will be confident heading into this Round of 16 clash. Who will get the win here and keep their tournament hopes alive?
Marcos Giron is ranked #65 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. He has been going under the radar for much of the season, but has had some very consistent results and is currently at an career-high ranking. The American started very strongly here in North Carolina, defeating back to back Argentines in straight sets in Facundo Bagnis and Federico Delbonis. Giron is a very consistent player that is one of the best movers on Tour, and will be banking on that to get past the sometimes erratic Pierre-Hugues Herbert. He doesn’t have a weapon nor the ability to consistently hit through his opponent, so he will be relying on his consistency and tactical ability here. If he plays to the best of his ability he should be considered the favorite here due to his superior recent results but he will know that he is in for a battle here.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert was once ranked as high as 36 in the ATP world rankings but after a poor past few seasons where he struggled with loss of form and injury, currently finds himself ranked outside the top 100. Due to his low ranking he had to come through the Qualifying Rounds to enter this event, and comfortably defeated Federico Coria in the First Round. He is coming off a minor injury and his form has been poor lately, so his confidence is likely to be low here. Despite this, he is still a very strong player when fully fit, and his all-court game is well suited to this surface. His serve and transition game are his major strengths, and I expect him to be counting on those to pull him through here against Marcos Giron.
The two players have never met before on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very close match. This will almost certainly go to three sets, and it is very difficult to pick a winner. However, I am going with the American Marcos Giron here, as he has proven that he is in good form, plus he is the fitter of the two at the moment. Pierre-Hugues Herbert probably has the higher upside when fully fit, but he is very hard to trust at the moment and I think that Giron will edge this one, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
