New York Liberty vs. Connecticut Sun 5/7/22 WNBA Picks, Predictions, Odds

The New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun face off Saturday in their opening WNBA game of the season at the Barclays Center. When these two teams faced off in September 2021, the Sun scored 98 points and that led to the blowout victory. 

The 2021 season was a better one for the New York Liberty, but they still have a long ways to go to be truly competitive. The big change this off season was the firing of Walt Hopkins, and they also brought in Sandy Brondello. The Liberty brought in Stef Dolson through free agency, but the biggest addition is actually someone who the fans are very familiar with. 6’10” Han Wu is back with the team after being away from the team for the last few years. Sabrina Ionescu has dealt with injuries to start her career, but on paper, she still looks like she could be one of the best players in the WNBA if she stays healthy. The Liberty didn’t play any preseason games, and that could be a problem for them in this game. 

On the other side of this matchup is the Connecticut Sun, who finished last season with the best regular-season record in the WNBA, but they couldn’t get the job done in the playoffs, and that has left a sour taste in their mouth. The Sun has six different players who have played in an All-Star game, and this might be one of the deepest teams in the WNBA. Alyssa Thomas is fully healthy heading into this season, and Courtney Williams is fully healthy, and both will have key roles this season. In the only preseason game, the Sun scored 94 points, and that was enough to secure the 16 point victory. In this game, if the Sun wants a chance to secure the victory, they are going to need the offense to be good. 

The Liberty might be better this season, but I don’t think they are going to find a ton of success in this game. Without any preseason games, I don’t think the Liberty are going to find a lot of success in this game. Look for the Sun’s offense to score at least 94 points again, and that is going to be the difference as Connecticut cruises to the victory. Back the Sun against the spread.
