The Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm face off on Friday in a WNBA showdown at Climate Pledge Arena. When these two teams faced off in August of 2021 it was the Lynx that secured the 76-70 victory.
The Lynx have one of the best coaches in the WNBA in Cheryl Reeves, but she might have her hands full with this team, as they have a ton of question marks. The star of this Lynx team is Sylvia Fowles who will be playing her last season before riding off into the sunset. Last season, in 31 games, Fowles averaged 16 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Napheesa Collier is the second-best player on the team, but she had a baby and won’t be around for the start of the season. Angel McCoughtry is dealing with a knee injury, and it’s unclear if she will be able to go in this game. The Lynx have Layshia Clarendon, who averaged 10.4 points per game and will be a key in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Seattle Storm, who are trying to send out Sue Bird on top as she also enters her last season in the WNBA. Sue Bird might be the talking point heading into this season, but there is a ton of other talent around her. When Breanna Stewart is healthy, this is a team that is close to unbeatable, and she will be joined by Jewell Lloyd, who is also one of the best in the WNBA. The Storm also has Gabby Williams, who missed last season but is going to be leaned on heavily here. The Storm won their first two games of the preseason, including 82-78 in the last game against the Phoenix Mercury.
The Storm are healthy heading into this game, where the Lynx might take some time to really gel with all the new pieces on the squad. The Storm scored 82 points in the last game, and I expect their offense is going to run up the score again in this game. This game is going to get out of hand, and Seattle will cover the spread.
