Phoenix Mercury vs. Seattle Storm
July 11, 2021 6:00 pm EDT
The Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury face off on Sunday in a WNBA basketball showdown at the Angel of the Winds Arena. This is the last game before there is a break for the All-Star game and Olympics.
These two teams ust faced off on Friday and it was the Phoenix Mercury that was able to come away with the 85-77 victory. The Mercury were led by Brittney Griner who put up 29 points and 15 rebounds.
The Seattle Storm sit with a 15-5 record overall and that puts them in 1st place in the WNBA standings. The Storm have won three of the last four games, with the loss coming in their last game. This is a Storm’s offense that has been strong this season, but at times the defense has really let them down. The Seattle Storm on the season are averaging 86.7 points per game while their defense is giving up 79 points per game. . Breanna Stewart has been the best player for Seattle this season averaging 21 points while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the three-point line.
On the side of this matchup is the Phoenix Mercury who sit with a 9-9 record overall which puts them 4th place in the Western Conference standings. Coming into this game the Mercury have won two games in a row, including that last game against the Storm. Each of the last two games the offense has been good, but at times they have been inconsistent with the offense. Three games ago, the Mercury could only manage 68 points while the defense gave up 99 points. Phoenix on the season is averaging 80.1 points per game while their defense is giving up 81.5 points per game. Griner has been the best player for Phoenix all season, averaging 20.7 points while shooting 56.5 percent from the field.
The Mercury looked good in the first game, but I expect the Storm to be more competitive in this game/ Look for Seattle to find a way to come away with a cover of the spread.
