Two of the most prestigious teams in the NBA will clash on Sunday in a matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks.

Neither team has had much to get excited over this season, but Carmelo Anthony recently grabbed everybody’s attention after dropping 62 points on the lonely Charlotte Bobcats. With this game also taking place in Madison Square Garden, there’s no telling what he’ll do for an encore. After all, the Lakers play absolutely no defense, allowing more than 100 points in 11 straight games. Um, no, that is not a misprint.

Playing only one side of the floor hasn’t helped the Lakers in the winning department. Not only have they lost nine of their last 11, but they’ve pretty much guaranteed being a lottery team and hopefully ensuring Kobe Bryant sitting out the remainder of the season. You simply aren’t going to win games when you’re scoring 100 points and allowing the opposition to score 106, which are the average points per game for the Lakers this season.

But despite the embarrassment that Los Angeles has become, it does have a solid 24-19-1 record against the spread. Meanwhile, New York is an ice cold 17-26 against the number and an even worse 6-17 on its home court. That means that there is value to picking the Lakers in this game. Sad but true. However, I just can’t bring myself to pick either of these teams with the number being what it is.

This has forced me to side with the over. Both teams have allowed an average of 107 points per game in their last five and have struggled to play a lick of defense. The Heat had about 50 uncontested lay ups in their recent meeting against LA. The over has hit in each of the Lakers last seven games and is 6-1 in the Knicks last six.

Let Carmelo go off and Nick Young do what he can to keep up. Just watch the points explode as both teams drop triple digits in the Garden.
