The Navy Midshipmen and Memphis Tigers do battle Saturday in week 2 college football action from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Memphis is fresh off an opener versus Mississippi State. In that game the Tigers took a blowout loss. As for Navy, they played Delaware back on Saturday. The Midshipmen ended up losing a low-scoring game there. Memphis had a .500 season last year, going 6-6 overall and 3-5 in American Athletic Conference play. That would leave the Tigers in seventh place in the standings. Memphis got an invite to play in the Hawaii Bowl, but the Rainbow Warriors had to withdraw due to virus issues.
In their 2022 opener versus Mississippi State, Memphis was outscored 28-3 in the first half during a 49-23 defeat. QB Seth Henigan managed 165 yards with one TD, and Jevyon Ducker rushed for 63 yards and a TD on five carries. Asa Martin added five grabs for 58 receiving yards.
Over on the Navy side, there were a couple of bright spots for the team last season, but it was mostly a disappointment. The Midshipmen went just 4-8 overall and 3-5 in AAC play. The good news for Navy is that they beat Army in their last game of the season 17-13.
Matched up against Delaware this past weekend, the Midshipmen couldn’t score outside of the third quarter in a 14-7 defeat. QB Tai Lavatai threw for 135 yards on five completions, and Daba Fofana led the rush with 15 carries for 47 yards.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Navy. This is something of a weird one, though. Memphis didn’t get to establish much of a run game versus Mississippi State after falling behind early. The Tigers couldn’t stay on the field with a 3-of-12 rate on third-down tries and they were out-gained in total yards 547-294. That’s going to make it difficult to find much success against a stingy Navy defense. This one’s looking like another low-scoring affair, and I like the Midshipmen to power out a cover.
