The Dixie State Trailblazers and the Gonzaga Bulldogs meet Tuesday in college basketball action from McCarthey Athletic Center. Dixie State is coming off a bumpy season last year, going 8-13 overall and finishing deep down the WAC standings. Dixie State had a mostly down campaign last year, going 8-13 overall and 4-10 in WAC play. That result left the Trailblazers two spots out of the basement in the WAC standings, just ahead of UTRGV (2-5) and Chicago State (suspended season).
The Trailblazers entered conference play at 4-2 last year, but quickly hit the skids with a six-game losing streak. Dixie State would win four of their next seven, then (after three cancellations) lost to New Mexico State twice to close out the year.
Over on the Gonzaga side, they were blemish-free in the regular season, plowing through a 15-0 conference record that gave the Bulldogs the WCC title. Gonzaga would go on to win the conference tournament with an 88-78 victory over BYU on March 9.
Gonzaga did some major damage in the NCAA Tournament, plowing through Norfolk State, Oklahoma, Creighton, USC and UCLA to get to the National Championship. Unfortunately the Bulldogs were bested by Baylor in a difficult 86-70 result that squashed Gonzaga’s hopes of perfection.
Dixie is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. The Bulldogs are 17-7 ATS in their last 24 Tuesday games. The over is 4-1 in Gonzaga’s last five Tuesday games and 40-19 in their last 59 overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Gonzaga, but I’m not going near this one because the line is monstrous. The Bulldogs look like the team to beat coming off their near-perfect campaign, and there’s no reason to doubt them in 2021-22. Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren should emerge as major contributors, and guys like Andrew Nembhard will provide skill and depth. They’ll provide matchup problems for 99 percent of the teams in the country and by all indications Gonzaga looks primed for another deep tournament run if all goes well.
