The Texas Longhorns and South Carolina Gamecocks meet Tuesday in the women’s college basketball NCAA Tournament Elite Eight at the Alamodome.
The Texas Longhorns are coming off a win over Maryland and hope to make their first Final Four appearance since 2003. The Texas Longhorns are averaging 70.1 points on 40.8 percent shooting and allowing 62.7 points on 42.3 percent shooting. Charli Collier is averaging 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while Celeste Taylor is averaging 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds. Joanne Allen-Taylor is the third double-digit scorer and Audrey Warren is grabbing five rebounds. The Texas Longhorns are shooting 32.6 percent from beyond the arc and 70.4 percent from the free throw line. The Texas Longhorns are allowing 30.5 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 37.6 rebounds per game.
The South Carolina Gamecocks just beat Georgia Tech and now look for their third Final Four appearance since 2015. The South Carolina Gamecocks are averaging 76.2 points on 44.1 percent shooting and allowing 58.7 points on 36.7 percent shooting. Zia Cooke is averaging 15.6 points and three rebounds while Aliyah Boston is averaging 13.9 points and 11.5 rebounds. Destanni Henderson is the third double-digit scorer and Victoria Saxton is grabbing 5.9 rebounds. The South Carolina Gamecocks are shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc and 67.9 percent from the free throw line. The South Carolina Gamecocks are allowing 27.1 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 47.3 rebounds per game.
There could be a potential letdown for the Texas Longhorns, as they just knocked out Maryland as 12.5-point underdogs. One of the bigger upsets of the tournament, Texas held an elite offense in the Terps to 61 points on 40 percent shooting and forced 11 turnovers. Of course, coach Vic Schaefer is no stranger to deep tournament runs or putting together impressive defensive game plans, so this should surprise nobody. The South Carolina Gamecocks are the more talented team, but they’ve also had issues on the offensive side at times and have allowed previous teams to hang around. At this point, doubting Texas and what its capable of on the defensive side probably isn’t a great idea.
Give me the Longhorns and the points.
