The Rider Broncs and the Duquesne Dukes meet Tuesday in college basketball action from UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. Rider managed a disappointing 6-17 record last season, finishing at the bottom of the MAAC standings. As for the Dukes, they went 9-9 a year ago and landed in ninth place in the Atlantic 10. Rider didn’t have a great season in 2020-21, ultimately finishing 6-17 overall and 5-13 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Broncs ended up in last place in the conference standings, just behind Manhattan at 6-12 in MAAC play.

The Broncs skidded out of the gate last year and managed a win in just one of their first seven games. Rider didn’t get consecutive victories all season either. That said, the Broncs took out Canisius 78-76 in the First Round of the MAAC Tournament before losing to Saint Peters in the Quarterfinals.

Over on the Duquesne side, they were a dictionary-definition average team last year with a 9-9 mark overall and a 7-7 run in the Atlantic 10. The Dukes ended up in ninth place in the conference standings, ahead of Rhode Island, George Washington, La Salle, Saint Joseph’s and Fordham.

The Dukes bagged wins in four of their final six regular-season games last year, capped with an 86-75 win over Rhode Island. Duquesne beat Richmond in the Second Round of the A-10 Tournament, then lost to St. Bonaventure 75-59 in the Quarterfinals to end their campaign.

The Broncs are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. Rider is 3-12 ATS in their last 15 Tuesday games as well.

Meanwhile, the Dukes are 5-0 ATS in their last five at home and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 overall. Duquesne is 4-1 ATS in the last five as a favorite.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Duquesne, but staying away. The Dukes underachieved last year with the .500 record, one season after bagging a 21-win run. There’s some massive turnover in 2021-22, and a whopping 10 players from last year’s roster are gone. Still, Duquesne boasts a group of eight talented new faces and still retains the massive potential of Tobi Okani. The Dukes are really going to have to gel quickly, but if all goes well I can see the team taking a step forward this season.
