The Southern Jaguars and the Rice Owls meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Tudor Fieldhouse. Southern is 1-1 so far this year and coming off a three-point win over Tulane. Southern matched up against Louisville in their opener this year. The Jaguars held strong with a 33-31 deficit in the first half, but faded down the stretch in a 72-60 loss. Southern’s top scorer was Brion Whitley with 17 points in 25 minutes of work.
In game two against Tulane, the Jaguars got their first victory of the year. Southern was outscored 43-35 in the second half but they still hung on for a tight 73-70 win. Jayden Saddler doubled up for the Jaguars in that one with 13 points, 11 assists and four rebounds.
Over on the Rice side, they didn’t have a whole lot of issues with Pepperdine in their first game despite a slow start. The Owls posted a 46-28 advantage in the second half in an 82-63 win. Travis Evee led the way on 24 points and three assists.
In their second outing this year, the Owls got a tough draw against Houston. Rice was blown away 44-15 in the first half and had little chance at coming back in an eventual 79-46 loss. Evee led the team in scoring again with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Owls are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 home games and 1-4 ATS in the last five after a straight-up loss. Rice is 5-0 ATS in their last five as a favorite.
Meanwhile, the Jags are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 after an ATS win and 4-0 ATS in their last four Tuesday games. Southern is 1-4 ATS in their last four as a road favorite.
PICK: I’m probably going to try Rice here, but staying away. It’s hard telling how the Owls will respond after their blowout loss. Rice shot just 28.0 percent from the field with 20 turnovers versus Houston, but did stay strong on the boards with a 42-39 deficit.
As for Southern, they shot 50.8 percent against Tulane with 35 rebounds and 24 assists. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jaguars very competitive in this matchup, but I think the cover belongs to Rice if they can get back to business quickly.
