The Hampton Pirates and the South Florida Bulls meet Wednesday in college basketball action from USF Sun Dome. Hampton enters this one at 2-3 so far. The Pirates lost to Georgia Southern in their last game. As for South Florida, they’re 2-2 this year and coming off a loss to Auburn. Hampton didn’t have any issues in their opener this year versus Mid-Atlantic Christian, cruising to a 101-51 victory. Game two against Regent was another big win, but then the Pirates fell to Towson and Wofford in their next pair.

Hampton made it three losses in a row with an 86-66 result against Georgia Southern. The Pirates were down 43-25 at halftime and didn’t get any closer. Russell Dean led the team on 30 points and three assists in the loss.

Over on the USF side, they went 2-1 over their first three games. The Bulls beat Bethune-Cookman in the opener 75-54, then lost to Georgia Southern 53-41. Game three was a 56-54 nail-biter win over NC A&T.

The Bulls hung around with Auburn in their fourth game of the year, even holding a 33-26 halftime lead. USF faded down the stretch with just 19 second-half points in a 58-52 loss. Caleb Murphy topped the team on 19 points and six boards.

USF is 17-38-1 ATS in their last 56 Wednesday games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 at home. The Bulls are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 after an ATS win.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and 1-5 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss. Hampton is 1-4 ATS in their last five on the road.

PICK: I’m going with South Florida. The Bulls punched Auburn in the mouth in the first half of their last outing, but the Tigers eventually woke up and took over. USF put up a tepid 35.0 percent shooting and were out-rebounded 44-33 but took good pretty good care of the ball overall.

As for Hampton, they haven’t quite been able to find a groove yet and have struggled with scoring consistency. If the Pirates get off to a good start here I can see them hanging around but I think this is USF’s cover.
