The Norfolk State Spartans and the Hampton Pirates meet Sunday in college basketball action from Hampton Convocation Center. Norfolk State is sitting at 5-1 on the season and coming off their first loss to Xavier. As for Hampton, they’re 2-4 so far. The Pirates lost their last game to South Florida. Norfolk State got off to a nice start this year with five straight victories in their first quintet. The wins came courtesy of Bridgewater, PSU Wilkes-Barre, Tennessee State, William & Mary and Bowling Green.
In game six against Xavier, the Spartans faced a tough challenge. Norfolk State fell behind 45-16 at halftime and limited to an 88-48 blowout loss. Christian Ings was the top scorer on 12 points and four boards.
Over on the Hampton side, their year started out at 2-0 with victories over MACU and Regent VA. Since then it’s been an 0-4 slide for the Pirates. They lost to Towson, Wofford and Georgia Southern over their next three outings.
Back on Wednesday versus South Florida, Hampton had a slim 24-21 lead at halftime but couldn’t hang on in a 58-52 result. Najee Garvin was the lead scorer on 14 points with three rebounds and two assists.
Norfolk State is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 Sunday games and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 overall. The Spartans are 5-2 ATS in their last seven as an underdog.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. The under is 5-1 in Hampton’s last six overall.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Norfolk State here. The Spartans really had no chance at stacking up against Xavier in their last game, and the team ended up shooting just 27 percent with a 51-37 rebounding deficit. Outside of that however, Norfolk State has done well this year against comparable competition.
As for Hampton, it’s been an ugly stretch of four games and they haven’t been scoring well. The Pirates have been at 66 points or fewer in each of their last four; it’s going to take more than that to keep up with Norfolk State in this one.
