The Elon Phoenix will travel to Greensboro Coliseum to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.

The Elon Phoenix lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 2-5 on the season after being defeated by the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 93-81, this past Saturday. Elon had no answers defensively for Jacksonville State and could not fight back after the Gamecocks took a 54-33 lead with 18:25 left in regulation. Elon shot 43.3% from the field & 39.5% from beyond the arc while allowing Jacksonville State to shoot 60.9% from the field & 70.8% from beyond the arc. Elon won the turnover battle by a 17-11 margin, however, was outrebounded by the Gamecocks by a 35-27 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Phoenix was Zac Ervin who had 18 points, 4 rebounds, & 1 assist.

On the season, Elon is averaging 74.3 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Phoenix are averaging 10.6 three-pointers per game on 37.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Elon has been led by Zac Ervin (13.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.0 apg), Darius Burford (12.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg), Hunter McIntosh (11.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.7 apg), & Torrence Watson (10.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.3 apg).

Defensively, Elon is allowing their opponents to average 76.7 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Phoenix have a rebound margin of -4.6 and a turnover margin of -0.3.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans won their 2nd straight game and improved to 6-2 on the season after defeating the Vermont Catamounts, 54-51, this past Saturday. UNC Greensboro trailed by a 25-24 margin at halftime, however, the Spartans were solid defensively down the stretch and was able to take the lead for good after a Dante Treacy three-pointer gave UNC Greensboro a 48-47 lead with 3:45 left in regulation. UNC Greensboro shot 42.6% from the field & 38.1% from beyond the arc while holding Vermont to 41.5% shooting from the field & 16.0% from beyond the arc. UNC Greensboro lost the turnover battle by a 13-7 margin, however outrebounded Vermont by a 37-26 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Spartans was Kobe Langley who had 19 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, & 2 steals.

On the season, UNC Greensboro is averaging 67.1 ppg on 42.5% shooting from the field. The Spartans are averaging 6.4 three-pointers per game on 32.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC Greensboro has been led by De’Monte Buckingham (12.4 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.0 spg), Bas Leyte (8.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg), Kaleb Hunter (8.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg), & Kobe Langley (7.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.8 apg).

Defensively, UNC Greensboro is holding their opponents to an average of 63.4 ppg on 38.1% shooting from the field. The Spartans have a rebound margin of 15.1 and a turnover margin of -5.8.

The Phoenix are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a double-digit loss at home & 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Spartans are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win & 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.

It’s been a tough start for the season for Elon, however, they have played a tough schedule which has included games against Florida, West Virginia, & Ole Miss and I do think the Phoenix are a better team than what their record & statistics currently show. UNC Greensboro is coming off an impressive win against Vermont, however, this Spartans team is not as strong as we’ve seen over the past few years, and I think it’s going to be a struggle for the Spartans to generate offense throughout the season. Elon has really struggled defensively, however, the Phoenix has been impressive offensively, which includes ranking 25th in three-pointers made per game & 67th in 3P-FG%, and as I just don’t think UNC Greensboro’s 266th ranked scoring offense will be able to keep up with the Phoenix, I think Elon does enough in this one to at worst, cover with the points. Good Luck!
