The UT San Antonio Roadrunners and the Grand Canyon Antelopes meet Thursday in college basketball action from Grand Canyon University Arena. UTSA is 5-3 so far this year. The Roadrunners are coming off a win over St. Mary’s (TX). As for the Antelopes, they’re 6-1 this season and fresh off a win over LMU. UTSA opened the year with a 1-2 run that included losses to Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Commerce. Since then the Roadrunners are 4-1 with wins over Denver, IUPUI, Lamar and St. Mary’s (TX) in that stretch.
In the victory over St. Mary’s (TX), the Roadrunners were outscored 40-38 in the second half but hung on for the 75-65 win. UTSA’s leading scorer Dhieu Deing posted 27 points with 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Over on the Grand Canyon side, their only blemish this year was a 68-61 loss to Wyoming. Otherwise the Antelopes have beaten Grambling State, North Florida, Prairie View, Life Pacific, Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount so far.
In the win over LMU, the Antelopes were down by five at the break but surged from there toward a 78-72 win after 50 second-half points. Holland Woods put up 24 points with one rebound and two assists for Grand Canyon.
The Antelopes are 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 at home and 21-7 in their last 28 overall. The under is 19-9 in Grand Canyon’s last 28 overall.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners are 6-22 ATS in their last 28 road games and 0-4 ATS in their last four after a straight-up win. The under is 5-1 in Grand Canyon’s last six after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m going with Grand Canyon in this one. The Antelopes got off to a slow start in the LMU game, allowing the Lions to shoot 54 percent from the field to their own 48.3 percent. Grand Canyon won the rebounding battle 31-24 (13-5 offensive) and collected 17 assists in the win.
As for UTSA, they’re coming off a good win, posting 52 rebounds with 13 assists but also coughing up 18 turnovers. If the Roadrunners aren’t totally on point in this one I think Grand Canyon will control the game and rally to a cover.
