The VMI Keydets and the Portland Pilots meet Friday in college basketball action from Earle A. Chiles Center. VMI is 4-4 so far this year and coming off a win over Summit. As for the Pilots, they’re 7-2 on the season. Portland beat Incarnate Word in their last outing. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

VMI started off the season with a 2-3 run, falling to Presbyterian, Marist and Presbyterian again during that stretch. Since then the Keydets are 2-1 with a loss to New Orleans between wins over Central Arkansas and Summit.

In the game versus Summit, the Keydets didn’t have a lot of trouble. VMI jumped out to a 39-19 edge at the break and kept the pressure on from there in an 88-40 blowout win. Kamdyn Curfman led the team on 16 points with two rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Over on the Portland side, they lost their opener to Arizona State but have since won seven of eight games. The victories have come over Willamette, Alcorn State, AR-Pine Bluff, Morgan State, Portland State, Southeast Missouri State and Incarnate Word.

In the win over Incarnate Word, the Pilots scored 37 points in the first half and 40 more in the second for a 77-68 win. Mike Meadows topped the team on 22 points, three rebounds, four assists and a nice 10-of-10 from the line.

The Pilots are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 at home and 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. Portland is 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

Meanwhile, VMI is 0-3-1 ATS in their last four road games and 0-5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The Keydets are 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 Friday games and the over is 4-1 in their last five road games.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Portland here. The Pilots didn’t have any issues versus a winless Incarnate Word team in their last outing, shooting 43.8 percent from the field with 43 rebounds. Portland has scored 69 or more points in five of their last six games.

As for the Keydets, they’ve been uneven this year but the good news is they’ve put up 71 or more points in each of their last three games. This one should be an interesting matchup overall but I think the cover is Portland’s to take.
