Arkansas State vs Texas-Arlington 1/20/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Texas-Arlington Mavericks and the Arkansas State Red Wolves meet Thursday in college basketball action from ASU Convocation Center. TX-Arlington sits at 8-9 overall this year. the Mavericks are coming off an OT loss to UL Monroe. As for Arkansas State, they’re currently 11-4 and beat UL Monroe in their last game early this month. TX-Arlington went just 3-7 over their first 10 games, taking wins over only UCSB, Lamar and Mary Hardin-Baylor. It’s been a 5-2 run over the last seven games though. The losses in that time were to Georgia Southern and UL Monroe—both in OT. 

In the UL Monroe game back on Saturday, the Mavericks kept the pace in a low-scoring game. In overtime, TX-Arlington was outscored 16-9 for a 62-55 loss. Patrick Mwamba led the scoring with 20 points five rebounds and three assists. 

Over on the Arkansas State side, they were 7-3 over their first 10 games this year with loses to Illinois, Morehead State and Texas Tech. It’s been a 4-1 run since then with wins over Air Force, Lyon, Georgia Southern and UL-Monroe. 

Back on January 8 versus UL-Monroe, the Red Wolves were down 51-42 at halftime. After a 48-32 surge from there, Arkansas State came away with the 90-83 win. Marquis Eaton led the team on 25 points, and Norchad Omier had 24 points with 11 boards. 

The Red Wolves are 10-3 ATS in the last 13 at home and 4-11 ATS in their last 15 Thursday games. AR State is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and the under is 4-1 in their last five road games. The under is 7-3 in TX Arlington’s last 10 overall. 

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Arkansas State, but staying away. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Red Wolves on the court and it’s tough to know what they’ll look like. That said, AR State has scored well over their last five games, hitting 68 or more points in each. Arkansas State has done fairly well at scoring lately themselves—they’ve hit 70 or more in three of their last four but came away with a 55-point dud in their last outing. If Arkansas State can shake off the rust early in this one they should be okay on a cover.
