The Lafayette Leopards and the American Eagles meet Monday in college basketball action from Bender Arena. Lafayette is sitting at 4-11 so far. The Leopards beat Army in their last appearance. Lafayette got off to a spotty 2-8 start this year with wins over only Rutgers and Columbia. It’s been a 2-3 run since then with losses to Holy Cross, Navy and Loyola MD between wins over Gwynedd-Mercy and Army.
In the matchup versus Army back on January 16, the Leopards were down 26-23 at the break. Lafayette outscored the Knights 45-28 from there in a 68-54 win. Leading the way was Leo O’Boyle with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Over on the American side, they began the year with consecutive wins, then hit seven straight losses before two more victories. The Eagles are just 1-5 since, falling to George Mason, Lehigh, Boston U, Army and Loyola MD.
Matched up against Loyola MD on Saturday, the Eagles kept the pace for the first half but were outscored in the second 41-36 in a 78-73 loss. Connor Nelson topped the team on 23 points, and Matt Rogers added 13 points with four boards.
The Eagles are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 as a favorite and the over is 9-4 in their last 13 overall. The over is 5-2 in American’s last seven at home.
Meanwhile, the Leopards are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 7-1 in Lafayette’s last eight Monday games.
PICK: I’m going to try Lafayette. Probably staying away here, though; there’s not a lot to like about this matchup. That said, the Leopards posted a solid win over Army in their last game. Lafayette hasn’t scored all that well lately, however. They’ve been at 60 or below in two of their last three. As for American, they’ve hit 66 or fewer in five of their last six. If nothing else this matchup should be competitive; I think the Leopards can pull off the cover/win in the end.
